Why Convert PNG to JPG?
PNG files are lossless — meaning they preserve every pixel perfectly, but at a cost: file size. A 3000×2000 PNG of a photo can easily be 5MB, while the same image as a high-quality JPG is only 300-500KB. That's 10x smaller with almost no visible quality loss. For photographs, screenshots of charts, product images, and any content without transparency, JPG is the smarter format. It loads faster, uses less bandwidth, and is universally supported.
The Transparency Trade-off
The one thing PNG does that JPG can't: transparency. If your PNG has transparent areas (like a logo with a cutout background), converting to JPG will fill those areas with a solid color. Our tool lets you choose that color — white is the default (matching most web backgrounds), but you can pick any hex color. If you need to preserve transparency, keep the file as PNG or convert it to WebP instead (which supports transparency with better compression than PNG).
JPG Quality Settings Explained
JPG compression is 'lossy' — it discards visual data the eye is unlikely to notice. At 90-95% quality, the difference from the original PNG is imperceptible to the human eye, but the file is 5-10x smaller. At 70-80%, you start seeing slight artifacts around edges and in gradients. At 50%, quality degrades visibly. Our default is 90% — the sweet spot for web use. For print or archival, use 95%+. For thumbnails or quick previews, 75% works fine.
When to Use JPG vs PNG
Use JPG for: photographs, product images, hero banners, blog post images, email attachments, portfolio images, and any image without transparency. Use PNG for: logos with transparent backgrounds, screenshots with sharp text, images requiring lossless quality, and icons. Use WebP for: everything on the web where you want the best of both worlds — smaller than JPG, supports transparency, and modern browsers support it universally. Our PNG to JPG tool is ideal when you've got PNG photos (common from screenshots) and need them as smaller JPGs.

Frequently asked questions
Why convert PNG to JPG?+
JPG files are typically 50-80% smaller than PNGs for photographic content. Use JPG when you don't need transparency — it's the standard for photos, website images, and email attachments.
What happens to transparency when I convert PNG to JPG?+
JPG doesn't support transparency, so transparent areas become a solid color. Our tool lets you choose the background color — white by default, but any color works.
Is PNG or JPG better quality?+
PNG is lossless (perfect quality, larger files). JPG is lossy (near-perfect quality, much smaller files). For photos, JPG at 90% is visually identical to PNG but 5-10x smaller.
Is my image safe?+
Yes — the entire conversion happens in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded to any server.
Can I convert multiple PNGs at once?+
This tool handles one file at a time. For batch conversion, use our Bulk Image Resizer tool (coming soon).
